$60 Billion: The approximate amount that extending the Bush tax cuts on income above $250,000 a year — which Congress seems on the verge of doing — will cost a year, in inflation-adjusted terms. On average, the affluent households that benefit from these cuts will save $25,000 annually. What else might that $60 billion a year buy?

•As much deficit reduction as the elimination of earmarks, President Obama’s proposed federal pay freeze, a 10 percent cut in the federal work force and a 50 percent cut in foreign aid — combined.

•A tripling of federal funding for medical research.

•Universal preschool for 3- and 4-year-olds, with relatively small class sizes.

•A much larger troop surge in Afghanistan, raising spending by 60 percent from current levels.

•A national infrastructure program to repair and upgrade roads, bridges, mass transit, water systems and levees.

•A 15 percent cut in corporate taxes.

•Twice as much money for clean-energy research as suggested by a recent bipartisan plan.

•Free college, including room and board, for about half of all full-time students, at both four- and two-year colleges.

•A $500 tax cut for all households.

(What to do about the Bust tax cuts should be a no-brainer for both the Democrats and the American people but unfortunately the Democrats' and my beloved Obama's lack of spine and leadership seems to be more potent than whatever brain power they may have locked away in their little heads. If the Republicans (and their millionaire/billionaire friends) win this battle, it's official: Americans prefer to be bullied and treated like idiotic children rather than be talked to and treated like adults.)

Sadly, since our news media is so fucking lame, Stewart by default is on the field. He's become one of the few voices of sanity "reporting" the news (yes, I know he's not a reporter, but many people do get their news from The Daily Show, for better or worse). But overall, I applaud Mr. Stewart and seriously cannot imagine our world without him (certainly I would not have survived the last decade).

Fun Fact: The Rude One's last comment is about the GOP cancelling George W. Bush's TARP (Troubled Asset Relief Program) even though House leaders John Boehner, Eric Cantor and Pete Sessions all voted for it. What he doesn't mention is that the majority of the TARP funds have been paid back:

Originally expected to cost the U.S. Government $356 billion, the most recent estimates of the cost, as of April 12, 2010, is down to $89 billion, which is 42% less than the taxpayers' cost of the Savings and loan crisis of the late 1980s...Of the $245 billion invested in U.S. banks, over $169 billion has been paid back, including $13.7 billion in dividends, interest and other income, along with $4 billion in warrant proceeds as of April 2010. AIG is considered "on track" to pay back $51 billion from divestitures of two units and another $32 billion in securities.

Now, obviously $89 billion is a lot of dough, but what would have happened had we not bailed out the banks? I'll defer to an expert since I know shit about our crazy financial system:

There is no question that something substantial had to be done when the bottom fell out of the asset-backed securities (ABS) market. It had to be done because the crisis put the safety of deposits at risk. Why? Because Glass-Steagall had been overturned and banks had become traders. Who cares if investment banks, private equity firms, and hedge funds trade and fail? I don’t – caveat emptor – unless bank deposits are put at risk and they were.So protecting depository institutions required propping up AIG and a number of financial institutions because banks trading activities had made these institutions interdependent.

But apparently, words are meaningless these days because Florida's Dove World Outreach Center has organized a "Burn the Quran Day" for September 11th. Obviously, this gesture has greatly contributed to our outreach efforts to create peace in Afghanistan:

Hundreds of Afghans railed against the United States Monday and called for President Barack Obama's death during protests about Dove World Outreach Center's plans to burn the Islamic holy book on Sept. 11.

The crowd in Kabul, numbering as many as 500, chanted "Long live Islam" and "Death to America" as they listened to fiery speeches from members of parliament, provincial council deputies, and Islamic clerics who criticized the U.S. and demanded the withdrawal of foreign troops from the country.

AW and I have pretty much written off going to the movies. Much of it is because, to paraphrase the old Snoopy cartoon, "We love mankind, it's people we can't stand." Seriously, who wants to sit in front of people talking on their cellphones or people who repeat every other piece of dialogue or people who bring their entire dinner to the theater? And don't get me started on the guy to the right who has no regard for another person's personal space.

Other reasons to avoid movies at the movie theater: Anxiety over getting a good seat; ridiculously loud THX sound; 20 minutes of crap before the trailers; 15 minutes of crappy trailers; bad, overpriced popcorn; those tubs o' soda; lousy prints; ballooning ticket prices. Oh, and laziness.

Laziness may be the key. Or more likely, it's convenience. If you can afford a big enough screen and decent sound (simply routing your DVD player, cable box, etc. through your stereo works just fine if you don't want to deal with the whole 5.1 surround madness) and you have access to HD movies on cable and, most importantly, streaming Netflix, why bother spending 2-3 hours with strangers in a dark room with a sticky floor? Which reminds me of another reason not to go to the movies: Whose bright idea was it to make average movies last beyond 2 hours? In the old days, when I used to walk to school shoeless in the snow, only event movies were 2-3 hours and they would mercifully have a built-in intermission. Can you imagine the horror of sitting in a movie theater for 2 hours and 26 minutes (2 hours and 26 minutes!) watching Sex in the City 2?!?!? You couldn't pay me enough money.

All of this leads me to the real purpose of this post: Thanks to the convenience of being able to watch almost everything imaginable right in the comfort of your own home, if perchance you want something else to eat, need to go to the bathroom two hours into Sex in the City 2 or, most likely in our case, get another bottle of wine, you can press the magical pause button. Two nights in a row there was an extreme need for more wine so I pressed pause. The following are the two random freeze frames that brightened up our living room (the first one's obvious; a cookie for whoever guesses the second one):
